A clearly expanding market sector, home automation is proposed as one of the most prosperous production sectors of the two-year period 2020-2021, both at a national and global level. The Italian market managed to close 2020 with a balance of 505 million euros – thanks primarily to home automation solutions for security – despite the peculiarity of the year in economic and social terms. This is a figure in line with those of Spain and France; respectively stable at 420 million the first and growing in 3% with a value of 1.1 billion the second. Germany and the United Kingdom maintained clear growth, with an increase in 16% and 10% compared to the previous year.
The prosperity of the market translates into a huge range of IoT products and devices which allow the monitoring and management of the home even remotely, as underlined by research conducted by the Internet of Things Observatory of the School of Management of the Polytechnic of Milan. Increasingly sophisticated devices, capable of responding to the most disparate needs of the inhabitants of the smart home, guaranteeing them ease, savings and safety.
THE ADVANTAGES OF HOME AUTOMATION
Generally speaking, the convenience produced by the automation of more or less complex domestic functions appears to be the value characteristic most appreciated by consumers. Accompanying this practicality is the great ease of use of the devices which, being designed for a generalist target, present intuitive interfaces and procedures. The need to control the various aspects of home management - and to control them remotely - is completely satisfied, thanks to the possibility of intervening on all devices connected via smartphone.
This “intelligent” control of the various energy sources ensures that management costs are reduced – even up to 30% – reducing waste and optimizing plant performance. At a real estate level, the home automation system enriches the home with such value as to redefine its positioning on the market. Last but not least, it is – precisely – the universe of opportunities related to security of the property.
THE SMART HOME BETWEEN SECURITY AND CONTROL
Home automation-style safety devices allow the concept of safety itself to be expanded to a variety of areas ranging from control of the operation of systems and sudden reporting of faults – as in the case of a gas leak – arriving at the vast theme of home protection from unwanted incursions.
The ones who are certainly the masters in this area are alarm systems home and security cameras. Smart burglar alarms - equipped with wireless functionality - are able to immediately warn in the event of unauthorized access to the property. These systems are also compatible with the most used voice assistants, guaranteeing effectiveness and promptness.
Accompanying them are the security cameras ranging from the cheapest ones - used to monitor pets or children - up to the most advanced ones, capable of sending reports to the competent authorities in a contextual way. All devices of this type allow the live streaming and many of them offer the possibility of recording footage by storing it in the cloud or on a memory card. Furthermore, the most advanced cameras allow a 360° shooting extension, aided by motion detectors.
The field of sensors is also very varied. It ranges - in fact - from gas, CO2, water, movement detectors, through to glass breakage detectors and specific sensors for doors and windows. These are devices with wireless functionality which can be passive infrared, ultrasonic, microwave and vibration, differing in terms of detection technology.
Finally, there is a clear growth on the market Smart WiFi locks which, generally installed on armored doors, allow access via smartphone or through digital recognition. Management can obviously take place remotely so that the safety of the property is a guaranteed principle in any condition.
THE HOME AUTOMATION SECURITY MARKET
As mentioned, the home automation sector is particularly vast from a product point of view. According to research by the Polytechnic of Milan, the level of knowledge of home automation objects among Italians has increased and the percentage of users who own at least one object of this type has grown to 43%.
On devices related to entertainment or system management, however, those related to security stand out which remain the most purchased solutions in 2020 despite a setback compared to the previous year, totaling a 21% on the entire category, for a value of 105 million euros.
In terms of future prospects, according to the report "Video Surveillance Market to 2025” of the portal ResearchAndMarkets, home automation security devices will be involved in a global growth of 11.8% per year until 2025. Furthermore, the global video surveillance systems market will grow from $7.6 billion in 2019 to $17.5 billion by 2024. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) will therefore grow by 18.1% during the forecast period 2019-2024.
